I. Getting Started with Glitter
There are many different types of glitter, each with its own unique properties. Some of the most popular include fine glitter, chunky glitter, holographic glitter, iridescent glitter, and metallic glitter. You can learn more about the different types of glitter and their uses in my blog post, The Ultimate Glitter Guide: Types, Uses & More | The Craft Safe.
The best glitter for your craft project depends on the specific application and the desired effect. Fine glitter is great for detailed work and a smooth shimmer, while chunky glitter adds texture and a bold sparkle. Holographic and iridescent glitters create unique, color-shifting effects.
Cosmetic glitter is specifically designed to be safe for use on skin, while craft glitter is not. Craft glitter may contain materials that can irritate the skin or eyes. Always use cosmetic-grade glitter for any body or face applications.
The best way to seal glitter depends on the craft. For paper crafts, you can use a spray sealant. For resin art or tumblers, a coat of epoxy resin provides the best protection and shine.
You can find a wide selection of high-quality, glitter in various colors, sizes, and types at my Etsy shop, The Craft Safe!
II. Resin Art Basics
Resin art is a form of art that involves mixing a liquid resin with a hardener, which then cures into a hard, glossy finish. Pigments, glitter, and other embellishments can be added to the resin to create unique and beautiful pieces.
For most resin art projects, a clear, UV-resistant epoxy resin is recommended. There are also different types of resin which have different uses, such as casting resin. Casting resin is used for filling molds or creating thicker layers, while coating resin is designed for thinner coats and topcoats.
When used correctly and according to the manufacturer's instructions, resin is generally safe. Always work in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, and avoid contact with skin and eyes. It is also important to choose a food-safe resin when making tumblers.
Curing time varies depending on the type of resin, the thickness of the layer, the temperature, and the humidity. Generally, resin takes 24-72 hours to fully cure. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for your specific resin.
To minimize bubbles, mix the resin and hardener slowly and thoroughly. After pouring, you can use a heat gun or torch to gently warm the surface and release any trapped air bubbles.
III. DIY Glitter Tumblers
Double-walled, vacuum-insulated stainless steel tumblers are the best choice for glitter tumblers. They keep drinks cold or hot for longer and provide a durable surface for the resin.
Yes, a cup turner or turning machine is highly recommended for making glitter tumblers. It ensures that the resin dries evenly and prevents sagging or dripping.
A clear, UV-resistant, food-safe epoxy resin specifically designed for tumblers is the best choice. Popular brands include Alumilite and Pro Marine.
You typically need at least two layers of resin for a glitter tumbler: one to adhere the glitter and another to seal it in and create a smooth finish. You may need more layers depending on the desired effect or if using chunky glitter.
The best way to seal glitter on a tumbler is to apply a layer of epoxy resin over the glitter. This creates a durable, glossy finish that prevents the glitter from shedding.
Yes, you can apply vinyl decals to a glitter tumbler. Apply the vinyl after the glitter layer has cured and before the final layer of resin.
Hand wash your glitter tumbler with warm, soapy water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers, and do not put it in the dishwasher, as these can damage the resin.

- My resin is cloudy. What did I do wrong?
Cloudy resin can be caused by several factors, including moisture contamination, improper mixing, or using expired resin. Make sure your workspace and materials are completely dry, and mix the resin and hardener thoroughly according to the instructions.
- My resin has a lot of bubbles. How can I fix it?
To remove bubbles from your resin, you can use a heat gun or a small torch to gently heat the surface of the resin. This will help any trapped air bubbles rise to the surface and pop. Be sure to do this soon after pouring the resin, and use caution when using heat tools. You can also try mixing the resin more slowly and carefully to prevent bubbles from forming in the first place.
- My glitter is sinking to the bottom of the resin. What can I do?
If your glitter is sinking, it might be too heavy for the resin you're using, or the resin might be too thin. Try using a thicker resin or adding the glitter in multiple layers, allowing each layer to cure slightly before adding the next. You can also try using a lighter-weight glitter, such as fine or extra-fine glitter.
